About Me
Francesca Alicea was born in Patillas, Puerto Rico. Francesca was raised by her maternal grandparents from birth to the age of seven. In 1960, Francesca moved to the USA to live with her biological mother and stepfather. While on the mainland, she experienced racism for the first time at seven years old. Francesca was shocked to realize that Jim Crow Laws could exist in a free country like America.
Francesca experienced rejection by her peers, educators and administrators in her school system. At the beginning of each school day in the mist of Jim Crow Laws that were being enforced and obvious segregation the students were required to pray and participate in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. By the end of most days, Francesca felt unwelcomed and, sadly, unwanted.
At the age of 19, Francesca married her High School sweetheart. The marriage eventually ended in a divorce and a lot of inner-growth. In 2003, Francesca found herself with an empty nest and felt the craving for a new hobby. In an attempt to release stress, burn calories and meditate she picked up running.
When Francesca discovered running, she learned something new about herself. Although, for years, she chose to bury her inner-conflict and suffering -- Francesca discovered she could not run from the inspiration to write her story. Sharing the story of her life was now of utmost importance.
My Adversity is My Growth
My inspirational story resonates with others and helps create ways to understand that pain is temporary. I've felt the lowest despair and I've, figuratively, scaled trecherous mountains. My goal is to help people understand how keeping their story within is not the answer. Although uncomfortable, developing the courage to speak about personal trauma results in growth. This is a cornerstone to all I have accomplished in life. All of humanity is on different paths, but must face adversity in order to flourish.
When we face adversity, we're able to better understand how the past is unchangeable. We also develop the ability to create new, memorable moments in the present. Sharing my experiences has helped me get through trials and obstacles.
If I was able to transform and heal, you can as well!
